Police To Release Makerere Fire Report
Police is set to release a report on the fire that gutted Makerere University’s main building destroying several offices and property worth millions.
The Main Building with its unique 20th century British architecture is easily Makerere’s most recognizable symbol and was constructed with funds from the Colonial Development house and was completed in 1941 under the leadership of George C. Turner, the Principal, Makerere College (1939-46).
However, the fire that ravaged the building is said to have started from the roof spreading to floors that house both records and finance departments.
Since last week, conflicting reports have been released with some indicating that six people were seen on CCTV camera footage entering the building before it caught fire, while other reports indicated that they were 10.
In a statement, police said they are actively investigating the cause of the fire.
The University Secretary Yusufu Kiranda said all footage was handed over to the police to aid investigations.
The report is expected be released today by both police and Criminal Investigations Directorate officials at the Uganda Media Centre.
Meanwhile, 8 people have so far been arrested in connection with the fire.
