Mawogola North NRM Primaries: Poll Pitting Shartsi Kutesa, Sodo Kaguta Postponed over Violence
NRM primary elections for Mawogola North have been suspended, Chimp Corps report.
The polls pit Foreign Affairs Minister’s daughter, Shartsi Kutesa and President Museveni’s brother, Godfrey Aine Kaguta Sodo.
This the second election exercise to be suspended by the party in Sembabule over violence.
NRM earlier this week suspended Mawogola West Polls in the same district to to pave way for investigations into the scuffle that occurred between supporters of candidates Hanifa Kawooya and Mr Joseph Sekabito.
Dr Tanga Odoi, the NRM electoral commission chairman on Friday confirmed that Mawogola North elections would be held at later date.
The party is holding party primaries for parliamentary seats and Women MPs across the country.
Last Saturday, supporters of Shartis Musherure Kutesa and Sodo engaged in open confrontation at a meeting that had been organized by the Sembabule NRM party registrar at Lugusuulu Subcounty headquarters.
The unending infights between rival NRM camps vying for the Mawogola North NRM MP flag on Monday attracted the intervention of the National NRM vice chairperson, Hajj Moses Kigongo.
Kigongo, while meeting the different NRM candidates on Monday, warned against the involvement of guards and aides to disrupt elections.
“Just use your security men to guard you and not to torture and intimidate rival candidates’ supporters. Candidates who misuse the privilege of their personal guards for selfish interests will be arrested,” Kigongo warned.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj Gen Sabiiti Muzeeyi on Thursday rushed to the area to strengthen security amid rising tensions.
