The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), a body mandated to regulate higher institutions of learning, has granted permission to 13 universities and institutions to start offering online classes for students majoring in various disciplines during this period of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Those permitted include Victoria University, ISBAT University, Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research Institute, African Renewal University, Uganda Christian University (UCU), Aptech , Lira University Uganda Martyrs University and Metropolitan International University.
Others include Cavendish University, Law Development Center, and the International University of East Africa.
“I wish to remind you that under section 3 (c) of the guidelines for adoption of an Emergency Model System, the permission is valid for 12 months or duration of the Covid-19 crisis as will be determined by relevant authorities,” reads part of NCHE letter.
Prof Jane Okwakwol, the Executive Director of NCHE has advised all permitted institutions to apply for renewal at least two months before expiry of the twelve months period granted to them in case they find it necessary.
Following the closure of schools in March, various institutions of learning made arrangements to continue with teaching students from home via online platforms so they could finish up the syllabus as well as keeping their students engaged.
However, this has to be done after clearance from the Ministry of Education and National Council for Higher Education.
