The Ministry of Health has on Wednesday confirmed 75 new COVID-19 cases in Uganda bringing the cumulative total number of infections in the country to 3,112.
The new cases were confirmed from samples tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday.
Of the 75 new cases, 65 are contacts and alerts and they include 30 from Kampala, 23 from Buikwe, 6 from Kikuube, 3 from Buvuma while Jinja, Mukono and Wakiso registered 1 case each.
The Health Ministry also announced that 10 health workers tested positive for COVID-19.
Despite the sharp increase in the number of cases, the recoveries have also risen to 1,528.
Meanwhile, 10 foreign truck drivers (7 Kenyans, 2 Tanzanians and 1 Congolese) tested positive for COVID-19 and were denied entry into Uganda as per the presidential directive that only COVID-19 negative foreign truck drivers be allowed entry into the country.
Out of the 4,133 samples tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday, 1,687 were from points of entry while 2,446 were from contacts and alerts.
Ever since Uganda began testing COVID-19, a cumulative total of 385,882 samples have been tested.
Currently, Uganda has a cumulative total of 3,112 COVID-19 confirmed cases, 1,528 recoveries and 32 deaths.
President Museveni on Tuesday approved the reopening of institutions with final year students undertaking health related courses.
This, according to the letter from the Executive Director of National Council for Higher Education Prof Mary Okwakol to Vice Chancellors and Principals of institutions offering health related programmes, is because the interns who are now in hospitals are about to complete their studies and this will create a health gap once they leave.
All institutions of learning have been closed for nearly 6 months in a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
