Kampala Mayor Aspirant Chameleon Flees to Near- by Plantation as Police Foil his Office Opening with Teargas
A dramatic scene rocked Balintuma Road in Mengo, Kampala on Tuesday afternoon after Police opened teargas on dozens of supporters to the mayor hopeful Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleone who had converged to witness the opening of his offices.
What started out as a peacefully cordoned off-area with heavy police deployment soon turned chaotic after the arrival of Chameleone at the premises by midday.
Chameleone who turned up with his supporters were defying a police order to cancel the event by proceeding with their event.
The chaos soon got nasty after a short scuffle between Mayanja and the police officers that prompted the use of tear gas in an attempt to restore calm an disperse the rowdy crowd.
Amidst the fog, Chameleone was hurriedly carried by his supporters to a nearby plantation where they hid as police battled the rowdy supporters with more teargas.
Some of the supporters who were gathered at the venue said police took over the office in the morning to stop the gathering.
