Uganda People’s Defence Force officials in Jinja have Tuesday morning arrested three men who have been masquerading as soldiers and extorting money from unsuspecting locals.

The trio has been nabbed from areas of Budondo in Jinja district and are said to have been operating in Bugembe and Kakira.

According to Capt. Edwin Mawanda, the Force spokesperson in Busoga region, the suspects have been posing as officers and soliciting money from youths promising to recruit them into the UPDF.

“Investigations are going on to find out who these people are and why they use the military uniform yet they are civilians. I therefore caution people in Busoga region to be very mindful of conmen and we encourage them to report any people who misuse our  military uniform,” he said.

Captain Edwin reminded the public that when the UPDF is carrying out recruitment, information is communicated through all media channels.

The suspects are currently under military custody in Jinja.
