Uganda Prisons Service Spokesperson Frank Baine has disclosed that after conducting a random test in Kitgum prison, out of the 138 inmates, 6 tested positive for Covid-19.
“After closing Peche and Amuru prisons for sanitization, clearing and quarantining of those who were not sick, we opened the Kitgum isolation center. Unfortunately, when we had a random test yesterday, out of the 138 prisoners, 6 tested positive in Kitgum which is also now closed. With effect from today, we are opening Padel,” he said.
While addressing the media, Baine added that another inmate with a back problem who had gone for treatment in Mbale, also tested positive.
“During the week, we had an inmate who had been admitted in Mbale hospital with a back problem. When he was tested, he and two helpers tested positive. They have since been transferred to Jinja referral center and are receiving treatment,” Baine added.
Baine also noted that the 153 prisoners who were transferred to Amuru and the staff who relocated to Gulu are stable and expected to have 100% recovery.
Concerning court hearing sessions, Baine said the prisons section has continued conducting business through video conferencing.
“In terms of court, we were having the special High Court session in Fort Portal and its consideration is highly on gender based violence. We continue to conduct business largely through video conferencing in order to minimize the spread of the disease,” Baine said.
