Sam Kwizera Bitangaro, the incumbent Bufumbira South member of parliament in Kisoro district has been arrested by police for violating Covid-19 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health when he addressed a large crowd of his supporters in total disregard of the Standard Operating Procedures government has been singing about.

Bitangaro is the latest NRM MP that has adamantly held a campaign rally despite warnings from President Yoweri Museveni and the Health Ministry.

On Wednesday, the MP was filmed in a clip that has since gone viral on social media, addressing a big rally in Kisoro District.

Elly Maate the Kigezi Regional police spokesman says the MP was picked up yesterday Friday and detained at Kisoro police station.

Bitangaro is said to have held the rally at Kabindi Playground in Nyarusiza Sub county which attracted hundreds of people.

Following the incident, the Kisoro district police commander SP Ruhunde Christopher directed Nyarusiza Police Post to disperse the rally.

However, due to the terrain of the area, by the time the police arrived the rally had already ended

The DPC then detailed more officers on ground who prevented further gatherings at Buhangura, Karambi, Mubande and Bushoka Trading centres all in Nyarusiza Sub county.

The DPC says efforts to have MP Bitangaro arrested on that day were futile as he switched off his known phone numbers and his Political Assistant Senzoga’s phone numbers went un answered.

On Friday evening however, he was traced and eventually arrested and is now detained at Kisoro CPS.

Maate says the MP will be charged with doing an act likely to spread an infectious disease contrary to section 171 of the penal code act and disobedience of lawful orders.
