Brig. General Francis Takirwa, the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) 2nd division commander has warned public transport operators against defying the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that were put in place by the government before they resumed operations.
Brig. Takirwa said this on Friday while leading a security team that visited Kisoro District and later held a meeting with transporters at National Teachers College Kabale in Kabale Municipality.
In the meeting, Brig Takirwa expressed concern over the practice by transporters especially bus owners of defying the presidential directives to prevent the spread of the virus.
His remarks followed a recent incident where Police in Rubanda District impounded a bus carrying excess passengers, mostly Congolese nationals.
According to Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate, the bus which belonged to Kwizera Executive Bus Company whose capacity is to carry 39 passengers was carrying 36 by the time the Policemen impounded it in Muko Sub County.
The Congolese were deported and the bus impounded and the operators charged.
The meeting was attended by Kigezi Regional Police Commander Eddy Sserunjogi, the UPDF 19th Batallion Commander Lt Col Robert Nahamya, Kabale DPC Brian Ampaire and the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate among many others
