The Government will decide next week on whether to reopen schools, churches and other places that were shut down nearly 6 months ago in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
This was revealed by President Museveni while speaking at the National Prayer Day at State House Entebbe on Saturday.
Saturday was declared a public holiday by President Museveni to hold national prayers to pray for the nation against COVID-19.
“We are discussing, we had a meeting of the National Task Force yesterday, even right now I am sure they are meeting, that is why the Prime Minister may not be here, we shall meet on Tuesday. We are going to look at all those issues. The schools, what do we do, the churches, what do we do and how,” said Museveni.
Pastor Joseph Sserwada, the leader of the born again faith had earlier informed the President that they have traversed the country, sensitized various church leaders and concluded that it is now safe to reopen churches.
The President noted that the meeting will not only focus on schools and churches but also other places such as bars. He, however, said that bars do not observe social distancing which is one of the health measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
Museveni also appreciated the people of Uganda who heed to government calls on the prevention of COVID-19 but bashed the people of Kampala who he said listen to many wrong pieces of advice that has in turn made Kampala a hotspot for COVID-19.
“I am glad that the people of Uganda listened to our advice, the majority. It is the minority who do not listen and that is how we are getting these cases. You can hear that the biggest number is in Kampala. Kampala is now the richest in Corona because they don’t listen,” said Museveni.
He added that people in Kampala listen to multiple advisors, do not wear masks, fail to observe social distancing among other COVID-19 preventive measures which has in turn made Kampala the hotspot of COVID-19.
Currently, Uganda has a total of 29 COVID-19 fatalities, of which 20 are from Kampala, 3 from Mbale and others are from Kiryandongo, Namisindwa, Kapchorwa, Kikuube and Wakiso districts.
“Imagine, out of 29 who have died, 20 are from this little place called Kampala,” said Museveni.
The President attributed the deaths in Mbale and Namisindwa to Kenya which is continuing to register a huge number of cases and fatalities.
