One of the biggest effects COVID-19 has caused is the closure of schools and learning institutions. The uncertainty that most students are going through is mind blowing especially because most are not sure when exactly schools will reopen. Their parents’ biggest fear however is the fact that they will be required to pay tuition, something many of them will grapple with considering the financial disruption caused by the pandemic that has left many of them without a stable source of income.

However, it is a different story for Sulaiman Magino and his parents. The senior four student from Pallisa won UGX 1,800,000 in the on-going MTN MoMoNyabo Together promotion.

The 22 year old senior four student of Mbale Progressive Secondary School danced as he received the money he won in total disbelief, saying he had never held such a huge amount of cash in his entire life.

“For the last six months I haven’t held as much as 50,000 shillings,” said an overjoyed student. Magino is a candidate who expected to sit for his final O level examinations this year was demoralized with how COVID-19 prevented him and all the other students from carrying on with their studies normally from school.

On the brighter side however, Magino was thrilled by the fact that even when schools resume, he would be able to afford school fees for his final O level year. He also intends to help his parents with the money he won. “I will start a shop for them to sell their produce seeing as they are peasant farmers,” he added.

Magino decided to share the money he won with his best friend Samuel Olupot. “We play soccer together and are in the same school and class,” he said.

Olupot was excited that his very good friend Magino shared this win with him; “I intend to start a business in selling maize, millet and groundnuts produce that will grow this money that I have won,” Olupot said.

Apart from the winners called in studio, 250 people win 50,000 shillings directly every day. All you have to do is pay using MTN MoMo and stand a chance to win

MTN hands over Iftar items to Old Kampala and Kibuli Muslim Headquarters

By Our Reporter

MTN Uganda and the Muslim community have had a long standing relationship. Every year, the telecom stands with the Muslim community as they observe the holy month of Ramadan by offering food and alms to the muslim community through Salam foundation.

This year’s Ramadan was launched with an Iftar dinner between MTN, Salma Foundation and the Muslim community at Hotel Africana. Thereafter as has been the norm since 2017, MTN Uganda in partnership with Salam TV once again reached out to the Muslim community to handover food and alms to the muslim community members, specifically the covid-19 Frontline workers.

Some of the targeted groups include the Muslim members in the Uganda People’s Defense Forces, Uganda Police, Uganda Prisons Services, Orphanages, Teachers and Prisoners among others. The food items include sugar, rice, maize flour, wheat flour and cooking oil.

While receiving the food items at Kibuli Muslim Headquarters early this week, Sheikh Luwalira Lubowa, Secretary-General of the office of the supreme Mufti thanked MTN and Salam Foundation for continuously remembering the Muslim Community every year.

“We thank MTN for the services they have been extending to the country and we pray a blessing upon MTN and all their work in the country. This is the 4th time in a row that they are reaching out to us and we appreciate the gesture. Many people rely on the mosque for iftar meals at the end of the day and we are happy that MTN and Salam Foundation are reaching out,” Sheikh Luwalira said.

Hajji Latif Ssebagala who received the alms on behalf of Kisaasi College thanked MTN for giving back to the Muslim community. He urged other companies to emulate MTN by remembering the communities who support them.

So far, these food items have been distributed to The Old Kampala Muslim Headquarters, The Kibuli Muslim Headquarters, Muslim Teachers at Kisaasi college and Naguru Remand Home.

The MTN and Salam Foundation Team will also handover similar items to The Luzira Prison Services as well as the Luzira Prisons Training School.

MTN Uganda’s Ian Mugambe said that as the country regains momentum following the disruptive Covid-19 Pandemic, the telco has decided to reach out to the Covid-19 frontline workers this Ramadan as a way of honoring their selfless duty to the country during the pandemic.

“On behalf of MTN Uganda, this is our way of showing appreciation for the people who have been at the frontline against the deadly virus by reaching out to them during this fasting period,” Mugambe said.

Other beneficiaries of the Ramadan handover include the Kampala Imam’s Forum, The Muslim Teachers’ Association and medical workers, who will receive their alms this week.

Alongside the food and alms, MTN has also launched a promotional offer which will automatically give customers 30minutes of talk and 100MBs of data every night between 12am to 6am, when they load airtime or any bundle using MTN MoMo. This promotional offer will end with the holy month of Ramadan and is also open to all MTN customers.
