The Ministry of Internal Affairs Spokesperson Jacob Siminyu has revealed that the Ministry is holding consultations on extending the deadline on the use of old passports, which was earlier set for January 31, 2020.

“The Ministry issued a statement informing Ugandans that we are carrying out consultations with our stake holders to ensure that we agree with them on which date can be appropriate for a new deadline,” he said.

While addressing the media, Siminyu said that Ugandans expressed discomfort and concern over the January deadline citing COVID-19 disruptions.

“Over the weekend, there was a document highlighting the deadline for using the old passports as 31, January which is the earlier agreed upon date and we are considering setting the deadline for a later date,” he noted.

Siminyu added that the process is not yet complete but the Ministry will inform the public once a new deadline is set.

“The process of consultation is not complete but as soon as it is complete and a new date is found and approved, we shall come to you and let you know what the new date will be,” Siminyu revealed.

“Meanwhile we encourage Ugandans who plan to travel soon to continue applying for their passports on www.passports.go.ug,” Siminyu noted.

Siminyu also stated the Ministry continues to manage borders, control them with other stake holders in ensuring that the Standard Operating Procedures are adhered to.

“We call upon all people visiting our offices at borders, regions and at headquarters to observe the SOPs,” he cautioned.
