Building Collapses in Makindye; Baby,Three Others Injured

Detectives of Kampala Metropolitan Police South Division in Katwe are  investigating a case of suspected rush and neglect that happened today, Wednesday August 19 at 7 am in Kirundu Zone, Luwafu Parish, Makindye Division in Kampala City.

Reports indicate that part of the second floor of the building belonging to a one Hussein Kabogoza, a resident of the same zone, collapsed and debris fell on the roof of Swaibu Kyeyune, injuring four occupants.

Among the victims included a four months baby who was rescued with severe injuries.

The injured have been identified as Swaibu Kyeyune, 53, Aisha Nyakato, 30, Ramathan Zziwa, four months baby, and Akram Mbaziira, 1.

“It has been established that the second floor of the building, was constructed near a wall fence,” ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the deputy KMP spokesperson said in a statement.

According to Oweyesigire, the debris destroyed not only Kyeyune’s roof injuring the occupants but also properties were damaged.

The injured have been admitted at Nsambya Hospital.

Owoyesigire said that Katumba, a builder, has been arrested and is detained at Katwe Police Station to help in the investigations.

“Samples of sand, cement and bricks used in the construction have been collected from the scene for verification by KCCA engineers,” he said.

This is the second building to collapse in Makindye this year.
