Police in Mbarara are holding one of their own officers and a Uganda National Roads Authority employee in  connection to shooting of a Western Uganda youth MP aspirant on Wednesday.

Samson Kasasira the regional police spokesman identifies the police officer as Cpl Osoda John Davis and the UNRA driver as Mutabazi Patrick Robert.

These are being detained at Mbarara Central police station for allegedly shooting and severely injuring Simon Katuramu.

Katuramu was on Tuesday shot by the counter-terrorism police officers attached to UNRA weighbridge station in Koranorya Mbarara city.

Kasasira, says the Katuramu was shot while traveling in a lorry that was carrying iron sheets.

The truck reportedly failed to stop when hailed at the bridge, which prompted the officers to shot at its tyres.

The bullets unfortunately caught Katuramu and one other occupant, who dies instantly.

“The victim after being shot in the chest, jumped out of the lorry, crawled to a neighbour who took him to Mbarara Hospital for treatment,” Kasasira says.

“As of now, two occupants are still missing, the lorry driver and his turn man,” police said.

“A team of detectives and Flying Squad has proceeded to Mbarara Weighbridge Station to arrest the Counter-Terrorism officers and UNRA Staff who were involved.”

Katuramu is currently admitted at Mbarara regional referral hospital.
