Police have arrested a People Power supporter who allegedly attempted to commit suicide at the pressure group’s headquarters in Kamwokya, a Kampala suburb.
The man in detention is identified as Robert Kakooza Kwesiga alias Sanya Tim aged 25 years, a resident of Kasokoso Kireka, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, Kakooza attempted to burn himself in the offices of People Power but area police intervened.
“Kakooza alleges that on 19/7/2020 while he was on a procession of People Power heading to Kayunga District for the burial of the late Charles Mutyabule, he was arrested and his motorcycle impounded.
He was later released but the motorcycle remained at Nagalama Police Station.,” said Patrick Onyango the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson
Kakooza further claims that he tried several times to get back his motorcycle, but a police officer kept on demanding for money.
According to Onyango, Kakooza later informed Mr Fred Nyanzi a brother to People Power leader Robert Kyagulanyi about his predicament, who promised to help and called him for a meeting today.
When he reached People Power offices, reports indicate that Nyanzi only gave him Shs 40,000 and yet he expected Shs200,000.
He reportedly got disappointed and decided to commit suicide.
Onyango says Kakooza doused himself with petrol and was about to set himself ablaze.
Police recovered a lighter, jacket soaked with petrol among others.
“We have instituted a team to investigate the corruption allegations on the part of the police officer. Kakooza is currently detained at Kira Road Police Station.” Onyango said
