Uganda’s local popular comedy group, Bizonto have finally been released after almost four days in the coolers.

According to Counsel Eria Nawanuwe from the Network of public interest lawyers, today Buganda road court ordered the release of Bizonto after the Criminal Investigation Department failing to produce the accused’s court file.

Today we are glad and happy that finally we have got a Court release order from the Chief Magistrates at Buganda Road Court, Her Worship, Stella Maris Odongo ordering the Police to release five people, Gerald Kiweewa, Ssabakaki Simon Peter alias Akozonto akato, Ssewanja Julius alias Ssabazonto, Mbabali Merceli alias Giant zonto and Gold Kimatono as Jjaja zonto to be released immediately from Police custody,” said Mr. Nawanuwe.

This follows a game where Police was engaging and not being truthful with where the accused’s court file was because yesterday, they informed us that their file was at the DPP’s chambers but we cross checked and it was not true. So today we came with a court order saying that let the Police release the five,” added Eria.

Speaking to the media today, Binzonto group narrated their jail ordeal and reason behind their arrest.

Apparently, Bizonto claim they were charged because of spreading false information regarding some government officials like, H.E YK Museveni, Bank of Uganda governor, Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile and the first son Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

We can’t believe that we are just out of jail. We were accused of unleashing false information to the public about the President of Uganda, YK Museveni. They also blamed us of talking to Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugba. Additionally, we were charged because of talking about the Bank of Uganda head, Mutebile,” they said.

Bizonto group was arrested last Friday after their renowned show on Radio Simba on allegations that they published a sectarian video, dividing Ugandans on tribal basis.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Spokesperson Charles Twiine, noted that their arrest followed a recording of selected videos that were uploaded and later shared on various social media platforms, which would cause hatred and unnecessary apprehension.

The CID on Monday, 27th July sent a special team of its officers that carried out a thorough search in the comedy group’s vehicle.

We will keep you posted

Top Police authorities are slated to meet the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga this morning to tackle the security raid on a thanksgiving function organized by the Mbogo clan head, and religious leaders at Mugulu in Mityana town over last weekend.

Mobogo Clan head, Kayiira Gajuule had invited Bishop Emeritus John Baptist Kaggwa the retired Bishop of Masaka Diocese to grace the thanksgiving ceremony when anti-riot police stormed the area and sprayed teargas to disperse everyone.

This incident has since drawn widespread criticism from both Buganda kingdom loyalists who have since marched to Bulange Mengo demanding an apology from the Police besides the public condemning police actions

Just yesterday afternoon,. Police were forced to use teargas and live bullets to disperse a group of Buganda loyalists at Mityana municipality protesting the incident and demanding that District Police Commander, Alex Mwine Mukono unconditionally releases all the motorcycles he confiscated during the raid.

This compelled the police boss IGP Martin Okoth Ochola to apologize to the bishop and the Catholic Church.

The police political commissar led by a team of senior officers announced that they would be visiting Bishop Kaggwa at his home to announce their apology to his family and the church on behalf of IGP Ochola .

On Monday, the police spokesperson Fred Enanga apologized to the Catholic Church defending the police action on preventing the spread of COVID19.

He said the firing of teargas was caused by a group of uninvited politicians including Francis Zaake among others who had attracted youth.

Now according to the Buganda kingdom spokesperson Noah Kiyimba, a meeting between the Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga and the top police leadership is scheduled for 11:00 am at Bulange Mengo.
